The Emperor's Horn
A world of deep seas, jagged mountain ranges and cruel, unpredictable weather, Grace Prime is a planet of stark contrasts. Its beautiful mountain vistas are best viewed from behind heavy void shields, since Grace Prime’s lightning and hail storms wreak havoc on unprotected travellers. The planet’s scenic valleys, a majestic sight as the early morning sun illuminates the
mountaintops in golden light, are located on the world’s thin habitable zone on the planet’s equator. The mountain range reaches around the planet’s equator, surrounded by vast, stormy seas. The seas turn into polar caps in the world’s north and south poles, covered in eternal ice and snow.
The origins of Grace are shrouded in mystery and controversy, due to the nature of its founding. The Rogue Trader Aspyce Chorda had located a perfect world, and for a huge price ferried some of the wealthiest individuals of the Sector to the planet, far from regular warp routes and kept off most charts. Here they could safely retire in an extremely comfortable exile, away from Imperial Judgement or, worse yet, the retribution of their rivals. Surrounded by countless slaves and protected by layers of void shields, they could indulge their every whim in opulent palaces of the finest imported crystal and marble. Each estate contained the plundered wealth of numerous worlds, enough to sate even their enormous appetites. Numerous others followed, all eager to escape their previous lives (and ensure their own continued), and Chorda was always ready as long as each could meet her incredibly steep fee.
Now known as Grace, the planet held a stark beauty but offered little outside the protected bubbles around the palace compounds. It is wracked by near-constant storms, with lightning providing the only illumination in many areas. Little can grow there except simple fungi, so the fugitives were forced to rely on Chorda for all their food and other essentials. When devastating warp storms crushed supply vessels and sealed off the planet, they were slow to realise the repercussions. Years passed, and the inhabitants grew more and more desperate for food. As the technology broke down, they took to raiding each other’s estates; when that failed to assuage their cravings, they turned first on the fallen, then on their slaves, then on each other. Those who were once the princes of the Calixis Sector, who ruled planets or vast criminal enterprises, were reduced to the most profane of existences. In time, their bodies altered to reflect their degraded lives, and became what are called Shadowkith today.
The Flora-Fauna of Grace Prime
The fungi of Grace is its only form of life, apparently evolved from a single prehistoric fungus. The humble fungus takes many forms, most common of which is the omnipresent grey growth along the slopes of the Golden Valleys. Otherwise inedible, the fungus was used to manufacture Grace Gyn, a highly intoxicating local beverage.
LOCATIONS ON GRACE PRIME
Port Chorda: The once thriving space port located on the planet’s equator. Port Chorda is a grim sight. Though vigilantly maintained, the decades without supply have reduced many buildings to ruins and the few remaining, housing the few hundred survivors, are in a state of perpetual decay, powered by a failing plasma reactor. Besides the landing platform, other landmarks of note are the Temple-Shrine to the God-Emperor, the Gyn Distillery and the Director’s Manor.
The Golden Valleys: The valleys on Grace Prime’s equatorial mountain range housed dozens of lavish mansions inhabited by Grace’s colonists. Their manors still stand on the slopes of
